In the process, they yield to their surprising chemistry, allowing their partnership to take a distinctly erotic turn. (It helps that Lizzie’s vampire bites prove literally orgasmic.) Even as romance blossoms, however, they can see their inevitable separation on the horizon: Maeve is committed to the rebellion and Lizzie is not. Robert makes it easy to dive into this installment as a standalone, but the tight focus on the romantic pairing leaves little room for worldbuilding or progression of the larger series plot. Robert is back with the second book in the "Crimson Sails" series, after Hunt on Dark Waters. Lizzie is a bloodthirsty vampire who has entered the realm of Threshold in order to recover stolen family heirlooms. She finds herself on the same ship as her ex-lover and her ex-lover's soulmate, who are both trying to overthrow the Cŵn Annwn Council, Threshold's governing body. The crew goes on a rescue mission to free Maeve, an important informant for the rebellion. Maeve is a selkie and was captured on her hunt for her stolen pelt. Lizzie and Maeve join forces to recover their missing items and find more than they expected in each other. The clock ticks on their time together as they get closer to tracking down their stolen items, and Lizzie must decide if family loyalty is worth more than her relationship with Maeve. Robert continues to create stories that feature inclusivity and strong relationships. VERDICT Lizzie and Maeve's story is sure to satisfy new and return readerss, especially for romance fans who enjoy morally gray protagonists with "touch her and you die" vibes.--Maria Martin
