Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions
December 6, 2024
Over 2.3 million Americans are currently incarcerated, some for crimes they never committed. Novelist Grisham (Camino Ghosts) and activist McCloskey (coauthor, When the Truth Is All You Have), whose organization Centurion Ministries has exonerated 70 people, present 10 stories of grievous errors in the criminal justice system. These errors stole freedom from dozens of innocent individuals who collectively served decades behind bars, some of whom remain there still. From browbeating interrogations to botched autopsies, there is seemingly no end to the ineptitude that can land a person in prison despite the undeniable impossibility that they committed the crime. Narrator Michael Beck presents these shocking stories of discrimination and disorder with a somber and stirring tone. Though the authors alternate in writing each chapter, their complementary style combined with Beck as the single primary narrator yields a cohesive listening experience. A preface, read by the authors, explains their motivation to speak out against a broken judicial system. An accompanying PDF contains additional notes and acknowledgments. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a thoroughly researched, thought-provoking collection of true crime that highlights this country's need for criminal justice reform. Recommended for fans of Barred by Daniel S. Medwed.--Lauren Hackert
