Kennedy’s seventh Killer Instincts romantic thriller (after Midnight Captive) is good clean fun in a formulaic kind of way. Mercenary Derek “D” Pratt is a typical tough hero with emotional scars from a rough childhood; one of his teammates has been kidnapped and D won’t rest until he rescues him. Dr. Sofia Amaro, who runs a clinic for the likes of Derek and his crew, is a kindhearted woman with an inexplicable weakness for gruff, tough men. Sofia discovers that she’s pregnant with D’s child following a one-time wild ride. When she makes a stupid, uncharacteristic decision, it throws them both into a perilous situation. Finally, D lets down all his defenses against intimacy, baring his soul—and considerably more—to the woman who he wants to share his life with if they can escape some really bad guys. It’s standard stuff, adequately pulled off by this seasoned author who knows what her readers want. Agent: Don Fehr, Trident Media Group.
