Starred review from June 1, 2021
This is no ordinary how-to-paint book. Instead, artist Brooks assumes readers have mastered the rudiments of the art and focuses on the composition of materials required for painting, such as solvents like turpentine (which, in her opinion, are to be avoided) as well as everything else comprising the paint environment. She provides a thorough introduction to all the different kinds of pigments (as one example, at least eight different blacks exist, such as ivory black, Mars black, and Vantablack), oils, putties and gels, and resins, followed by education on needed hardware--palettes, brushes, even digital technology. Lighthearted line illustrations enliven a sometimes difficult-to-face narrative (covering, for instance, the evils of specific additives and practices) while excellent brand comparisons help would-be painters think about purchases before making costly mistakes. Best yet are Brooks' recommended practices for varnishing, cleaning brushes (try soap!), safety, and other troubleshooting. A great ""let's begin here"" preface to Tad Spurgeon's Living Craft: A Painter's Process (2011). Includes glossary, resources, and bibliography.
