      Narrator Kirsten Potter sets the scene for this audiobook with an ominous tone as she describes the gothic Greer mansion. By 1975, both of Beth Greer's parents are dead, and in 1977, 23-year-old Beth is accused of two murders. She's acquitted and retreats to her lonely home. In 2017, Shea Collins is a receptionist by day and a true-crime blogger by night. A chance encounter leads to Beth's granting Shea an interview--her only one in 40 years. Brittany Pressley narrates Shea's perspective, using panicked, rushed speech as Shea encounters things she cannot explain during her investigation. Potter is superb as Beth, sometimes using an imperious tone, other times becoming hushed. Narrator Robert Petkoff rounds out the performance by delivering trial transcripts. Eventually she realizes--it's rich, glamorous Beth Greer, who allegedly got away with murdering two men in cold blood in 1977. Shea follows Beth when she leaves and asks to interview her for her pet project, a true crime website called The Book of Cold Cases. Somewhat unexpectedly, Beth agrees and as Shea learns more about Beth's history--and about the deaths of Beth's parents--she is pulled into a complicated, terrifying situation. Assisted by the retired police officer who originally arrested Beth and the man who does the research for her site, Shea must overcome her own trauma and the very real threat of more violence to learn the truth. St. James (The Sun Down Motel) weaves an entertaining story, though listeners who like answers grounded in realism will be disappointed. Brittany Pressley, Kirsten Potter, and Robert Petkoff provide skillful narration. VERDICT Recommended for fans of the author and those who enjoy supernatural thrillers.--Stephanie Klose
